Can Pressure Washing Remove Graffiti?

Waking up in the morning to find that your property has been vandalized with spray paint can be shocking and infuriating, but there’s no need to panic! With the proper equipment and know-how, graffiti can easily be pressure washed off a variety of different surfaces.

How to Pressure Wash Graffiti

Before you go blasting away at the unwanted “artwork,” there are two essential factors you need to consider to effectively remove the paint and avoid damaging your home or property.

Consider the Surface you are Washing

When adjusting the pressure settings on your machine, you need to consider the surface that you plan to wash. If your water pressure is too low, you will struggle to get the paint off, but if your set the PSI (pounds per square inch) too high, you risk damaging your property.

For stone and concrete, a setting between 2000 and 3000 PSI will be enough to get the job done. However, it’s best to turn down the pressure for wood surfaces. When washing softwoods like cedar or pine, you should spray at roughly 500 PSI. For hardwoods like oak, you can usually turn up the pressure to 1500 PSI without causing any splintering.

How Fresh is the Paint?

The sooner you can pressure wash spraypaint, the better. If the paint is only a few days old, it is much easier to remove it with water alone, but if the paint has been given a few days to cure, you might need to pre-wash the surface with a chemical solvent like Taginator before hitting it with high pressure.
